Two steel cables run from the bottom brackets of your door up to the drums on the shaft above. They do the actual lifting alongside the Garage Door Springs, they are under full tension every moment the door is shut, and they wear from the inside outwards — which is precisely why the warning gets missed.
What to look for
With the door fully open (tension at its lowest), look at the cable where it wraps the drum and where it meets the bottom bracket. You are looking for broken strands standing proud of the cable, kinks, flattened sections, or rust-coloured dust below the drum.
A cable never fails all at once. It loses strands quietly for months. The dust on the floor under the drum is usually the first clue anyone notices.

Why a broken cable is more than an inconvenience
When one cable parts, the door is being lifted at one corner only. It racks in the tracks, usually jams, and frequently comes off track entirely — which bends sections and can pull the track from the wall. What was a modest cable replacement becomes a much larger repair.
If you see fraying
- Stop using the door. Every cycle costs strands.
- Do not attempt replacement yourself — the cable is under full spring load at the bottom bracket.
- Replace both cables, not one. They have done identical work.
- Have the drums checked at the same time; a rough drum is often what damaged the cable.
How long should they last?
On an inland property with regular lubrication, cables commonly outlast a set of springs. On the coast, or where water sits against the bottom bracket, they can go much sooner. They are inexpensive parts — replacing them alongside springs is usually the sensible call.
Why this is worth two minutes of your month
A garage door is the heaviest moving object most houses contain, and modern ones have real safety engineering built into them: two independent reversing systems, sections designed not to trap fingers, and containment so a failed spring cannot travel.
All of it only helps while it is working, and all of it can stop working silently. A photo-eye knocked half an inch out of line still looks fine. Force limits wound up to compensate for a stiff door still open it normally. Nothing announces itself — which is exactly why it is worth deliberately testing rather than assuming.
The two tests, and how to do them properly
The first is the photo-eyes. With the door open, press close and pass something through the beam near the floor — a broom handle is ideal. Never a hand or a foot. The door should stop and reverse immediately, not hesitate or continue.
The second is the mechanical reverse. Lay a solid object flat on the floor in the door's path and close it. When the door meets the object it should reverse on contact. If it presses down, keeps going, or needs a shove to trigger, the force setting is too high and needs adjusting rather than living with.
What we check on a safety visit
The same sequence every time, because safety systems fail quietly:
- Photo-eye alignment and the condition of both lenses — damp and grit cause as many faults as knocks do.
- The mechanical auto-reverse, tested against a solid object laid on the floor.
- Force settings, checked against what the door actually needs rather than what it has been given.
- Spring containment, and safety cables on any door running extension springs.
- The manual release, which needs to work when the power does not.
The two visits a year that matter
We suggest servicing twice here rather than annually, and the timing is the point. Once before the cold so the door is not fighting stiff grease and a tight track through the worst of it. Once after, to get the winter's road salt off the bottom section before it sits there through the summer quietly eating the steel. Miss the second one and you pay for it in about three years.
The twenty minutes that prevents most call-outs
Take a socket set to every hinge, bracket and track bolt on the door. Firm, not over-tight. A year of vibration works them loose, and loose fixings are where rattles, misalignment and eventually track damage all begin.
Then lubricate properly: hinge pivots, roller stems, spring coils and end bearings. Never the track — rollers are meant to roll along it, and a greased track just collects grit and grinds it into the rollers.
The repair that never holds
Straightening bent track and putting it back. It never runs true again, and the door works its rollers against a kink every single cycle until something else gives. Track is not an expensive part. Trying to save it is what turns a track job into a track, roller and section job.

Stop using a door that is behaving strangely. That single habit prevents more expensive damage than any maintenance routine, because the cost is rarely in the original fault — it is in the cycles after it.
