Every garage door fitted in Connecticut has to be rated for the wind pressure at its own address — not a state average, and not what the neighbouring town needs. Very few homeowners know what theirs is rated for, and a fair number of doors turn out not to be rated at all.
What the rating actually describes
It is a design pressure — how much positive and negative pressure the door assembly can take without failing. Positive is wind pushing in. Negative is suction pulling out.
Suction is usually what takes a door, which is why bracing that only resists inward push is not enough on its own.
The shoreline difference
Design wind speed is not the same across Connecticut. Towns on Long Island Sound are assigned higher design pressures than the inland hills, and stretches of the shoreline fall inside a wind-borne debris region where openings carry additional impact requirements. Two identical houses, one in Greenwich and one in Torrington, can need different doors.
This is the reason a door bought online cannot always be signed off on the shoreline. It is not us being difficult — the rating genuinely does not cover that address.

Finding your label
Where to look
- Inside face of one of the door sections, often the second or third from the bottom.
- On the track, near the top bracket.
- On paperwork from the original installation, if you have it.
- No label anywhere? Assume unrated until proven otherwise.
If your door is under-rated
You have two routes. An approved bracing kit designed for your specific door, or replacement.
Bracing is considerably cheaper and it is a legitimate engineered solution. What does not count is a length of timber wedged against the inside. That has never worked and it never will.
Why the garage door is the one that matters
Ask a structural engineer which opening fails first in a storm and the garage door comes up immediately. It is the largest single opening in most houses and the least reinforced.
The failure mode is what makes it serious. Once the door goes, wind is inside the building, and pressure starts working against the roof structure from underneath rather than pressing down on it. A door problem becomes a roof problem quickly, which is why the rating on the door is worth knowing before the weather arrives.
Finding out what yours is rated for
There should be a label inside the door, usually on one of the sections or on the track. It states a design pressure: how much positive and negative pressure the assembly is built to take.
Positive is wind pushing the door inwards. Negative is suction pulling it outwards, and suction is what usually takes a door — which is why bracing that only resists inward push is not enough on its own. If there is no label anywhere on the door, treat it as unrated until somebody demonstrates otherwise.

Worth doing before the cold rather than during it:
- Tighten every track bracket, hinge and lag bolt. A year of vibration loosens them and winter finds the loose ones.
- Lubricate with a light lithium or silicone spray — heavy grease stiffens in the cold and makes the door drag.
- Check the bottom seal is soft and sitting flat, so it is less likely to freeze to the slab.
- Clean both photo-eye lenses and check alignment before snow starts getting shovelled near them.
- Confirm the Garage Door Opener has a battery backup, or work out now how you will open the door without power.
Why our winter is busier than our summer
Cold does not create faults so much as finish them off. A spring near the end of its cycle life, a cable already frayed at the drum, a roller that has started to drag — all of them survive a mild autumn and give up on the first properly cold morning. That is why our call volume climbs with the first hard freeze and stays there until the thaw.
Listening to the door properly
Doors give plenty of warning, but the warning is a noise and most people stop hearing familiar noises. It is worth standing in the garage and listening to a full cycle, deliberately, twice a year.
Grinding usually means dry or worn rollers. A rhythmic bang is often a hinge. A single sharp crack is the one to act on immediately — that is usually a spring or a cable.
The repair that never holds
Straightening bent track and putting it back. It never runs true again, and the door works its rollers against a kink every single cycle until something else gives. Track is not an expensive part. Trying to save it is what turns a track job into a track, roller and section job.
Worth remembering
A door that is balanced, correctly lubricated and has working safety reverses will outlast one that is not by years rather than months. Nothing on that list is expensive or difficult.
