The keypad is the most exposed component in the entire system. It lives outdoors through Connecticut winters, gets rained on, frozen, and jabbed with cold fingers, and is expected to keep working for years. Mostly they do. When they stop, the reason is usually one of a short list.
1. The battery
Almost always. Keypads run on their own battery, not the Garage Door Opener's power.
The tell-tale is a keypad that has become intermittent — works sometimes, needs a firm press, backlight looks dim. Change it before assuming anything worse.
2. It has lost its pairing
A power cut or an opener reset can wipe the code. Reprogramming means pressing LEARN on the motor head and entering your PIN within a short window.
The manual will have the exact sequence, and it is usually under a minute.
3. Water has got in
This is the Connecticut one. Moisture in the housing corrodes the contacts.
If certain digits work and others do not, that is corrosion on the membrane. Replace the keypad — that one does not come back.

Making the next one last
- Mount it under whatever shelter is available, out of direct rain.
- Choose a model with a proper weather cover and use it.
- Change the battery yearly rather than waiting for failure.
- Change the PIN occasionally, particularly after work has been done at the house.
What the opener is actually for
An opener guides a door. It does not lift one. On a correctly balanced door the Garage Door Springs are carrying essentially all of the weight, and the motor is moving perhaps ten pounds of effective load — which is how a small motor moves a heavy door several times a day for twenty years without complaint.
Ask it to lift the actual weight of the door because the Garage Door Springs have weakened, and the arithmetic changes completely. The motor is now doing work it was never sized for, and it will not do it for long. That is why we look at the springs before we look at the opener, and why replacing an opener without fixing the balance just buys the same failure again.
Repair or replace the unit?
Drive gears, sprockets, capacitors, remotes, sensors and even logic boards are all replaceable parts, and on a unit under about ten years old, repairing one of them usually wins comfortably on cost.
Past roughly fifteen years the sums change. Boards get harder to source, the surrounding components are all the same age, and a unit that old may predate the safety requirements that came in later. If yours has no photo-eyes at all, that is not a Garage Door Repair decision — it needs replacing regardless of what has failed.
What we check on an opener call
Whatever the complaint was, the sequence is the same, because the Garage Door Opener is usually not the problem:
- The door balance by hand, opener disconnected, before the motor is touched at all.
- Travel and force limits in both directions — force wound up over the years is a genuine safety issue.
- Both safety systems: the photo-eyes and the mechanical auto-reverse, tested against an obstruction.
- The drive: chain tension, belt condition or screw lubrication, plus the trolley and coupler.
- The logic board and capacitor, particularly on a unit that has been through a few winters.
Older houses, older hardware
A lot of Connecticut housing stock predates the safety requirements modern openers are built around, and plenty of garages still carry doors and hardware from the 1980s and 90s. That is not automatically a problem. What is a problem is extension springs without safety cables, openers with no auto-reverse, and force limits wound up over the years to compensate for a door that was never rebalanced.
The one test worth doing yourself
Pull the release cord with the door shut, then lift it by hand to about waist height and let go. A correctly balanced door stays roughly where you left it. If it slides shut or runs up, the springs are no longer carrying the weight and the opener is making up the difference — which is how openers die early.
It takes thirty seconds and it is the single most useful thing a homeowner can check.
The repair that never holds
Straightening bent track and putting it back. It never runs true again, and the door works its rollers against a kink every single cycle until something else gives. Track is not an expensive part. Trying to save it is what turns a track job into a track, roller and section job.
Before you do anything else
Work out whether the door is safe to keep using. A spring, a cable or anything that has left the door crooked means stop. A noise, a slow cycle or an intermittent remote means you have time.
Getting that distinction right is worth more than any amount of troubleshooting.
