A remote that works only when you are almost on the driveway is a different fault from one that has stopped working altogether, and it usually has a completely different cause. Range loss is gradual, which is why it gets tolerated for months.
Start with the battery
A weakening battery loses transmission power before it loses the ability to transmit at all. That is exactly the shrinking-range pattern. Replace it first — it resolves most cases.
Then the antenna
A thin wire hangs down from the motor head. It is the receiving antenna. If it has been tucked up, cut, or coiled around the housing, range drops sharply. It should hang straight down, free of metal.
Half the "failing remote" calls we attend are an antenna wire someone tidied away.

Interference
LED bulbs are the usual suspect. Cheap LED lamps in the Garage Door Opener or nearby fittings emit radio noise right across the frequencies openers use. If range collapsed after you changed a bulb, that is your answer — swap for an LED marketed as garage-door-opener compatible.
Quick sequence
- New battery.
- Check the antenna hangs straight and undamaged.
- Remove or change recently fitted LED bulbs.
- Test a second remote — if both are poor, the fault is at the opener, not the remote.
What the opener is actually for
An opener guides a door. It does not lift one. On a correctly balanced door the Garage Door Springs are carrying essentially all of the weight, and the motor is moving perhaps ten pounds of effective load — which is how a small motor moves a heavy door several times a day for twenty years without complaint.
Ask it to lift the actual weight of the door because the Garage Door Springs have weakened, and the arithmetic changes completely. The motor is now doing work it was never sized for, and it will not do it for long. That is why we look at the springs before we look at the opener, and why replacing an opener without fixing the balance just buys the same failure again.
Repair or replace the unit?
Drive gears, sprockets, capacitors, remotes, sensors and even logic boards are all replaceable parts, and on a unit under about ten years old, repairing one of them usually wins comfortably on cost.
Past roughly fifteen years the sums change. Boards get harder to source, the surrounding components are all the same age, and a unit that old may predate the safety requirements that came in later. If yours has no photo-eyes at all, that is not a Garage Door Repair decision — it needs replacing regardless of what has failed.
What we check on an opener call
Whatever the complaint was, the sequence is the same, because the Garage Door Opener is usually not the problem:
- The door balance by hand, opener disconnected, before the motor is touched at all.
- Travel and force limits in both directions — force wound up over the years is a genuine safety issue.
- Both safety systems: the photo-eyes and the mechanical auto-reverse, tested against an obstruction.
- The drive: chain tension, belt condition or screw lubrication, plus the trolley and coupler.
- The logic board and capacitor, particularly on a unit that has been through a few winters.
What the freeze-thaw cycle actually does
Water gets into places it should not, freezes, expands, and levers things apart a fraction at a time. That is the whole mechanism. It works fixings loose, it lifts the bottom seal off the slab, and it opens gaps along the jamb that were not there in autumn. A door that sealed cleanly in October showing daylight down one side by February has not broken — it has been moved.
The maintenance nobody thinks about
The bottom seal. It is the cheapest part on the door and it does more than keep draughts out: it stops meltwater running under the door and freezing there overnight.
A seal that has gone hard, split or flattened is the reason a door freezes to the slab, and the reason somebody holds the button down until something breaks. Replacing one is a small job that prevents a much larger one.
The assumption that costs the most
Thinking a struggling opener needs replacing. Nine times out of ten the opener is fine and the door is not: unbalanced springs mean the motor is lifting weight it was never designed to lift. Fit a new opener without fixing that and you have bought yourself the same failure again, a bit further down the road.
