Two small plastic units bolted six inches off the floor, costing very little, capable of stopping your entire garage door working the moment they stop seeing one another. Photo-eye sensors are the cheapest call-out we attend and the most common.
First, read the lights
Both units have an LED. One is the sender, one is the receiver.
Solid on both? They are talking to each other and your problem is elsewhere. Blinking, flickering or dark on one? That is your fault, right there.

Now line them up
Loosen the wing nut on the blinking unit. Do not remove it — just enough that the bracket moves with a bit of resistance.
Move it slowly. Very slowly. You are looking for the exact point where the LED goes solid and stays solid. Then hold it there and tighten the nut without letting it shift.
People rush this bit and tighten while the light is flickering. It will work for a day, then the first slammed door knocks it out again.

If it keeps drifting out
A sensor that will not stay aligned usually has a bent bracket, or it is mounted to something that moves — a loose track, a flexing bit of trim.
Fix the mounting, not the sensor.
Before you give up on alignment
- Wipe both lenses. Dust and cobwebs block the beam just as well as misalignment.
- Look along the beam path for a bin, a bike wheel or a coiled hose.
- Check the wires at the back of each unit — staples through the cable are common.
- Strong low sun straight into the receiver can swamp it. If it only fails at one time of day, that is why.
What the opener is actually for
An opener guides a door. It does not lift one. On a correctly balanced door the Garage Door Springs are carrying essentially all of the weight, and the motor is moving perhaps ten pounds of effective load — which is how a small motor moves a heavy door several times a day for twenty years without complaint.
Ask it to lift the actual weight of the door because the springs have weakened, and the arithmetic changes completely. The motor is now doing work it was never sized for, and it will not do it for long. That is why we look at the springs before we look at the Garage Door Opener, and why replacing an opener without fixing the balance just buys the same failure again.
Repair or replace the unit?
Drive gears, sprockets, capacitors, remotes, sensors and even logic boards are all replaceable parts, and on a unit under about ten years old, repairing one of them usually wins comfortably on cost.
Past roughly fifteen years the sums change. Boards get harder to source, the surrounding components are all the same age, and a unit that old may predate the safety requirements that came in later. If yours has no photo-eyes at all, that is not a Garage Door Repair decision — it needs replacing regardless of what has failed.
What we check on an opener call
Whatever the complaint was, the sequence is the same, because the Garage Door Opener is usually not the problem:
- The door balance by hand, opener disconnected, before the motor is touched at all.
- Travel and force limits in both directions — force wound up over the years is a genuine safety issue.
- Both safety systems: the photo-eyes and the mechanical auto-reverse, tested against an obstruction.
- The drive: chain tension, belt condition or screw lubrication, plus the trolley and coupler.
- The logic board and capacitor, particularly on a unit that has been through a few winters.
Why Connecticut is harder on a door
A garage door in Connecticut works through a bigger temperature swing than most of the country manages, and it does it twice a day for five months of the year. Metal contracts, grease stiffens, and the slab under the door lifts and settles with the frost. None of that is dramatic on any single morning. Over a winter it is what turns a door that was fine in October into one that binds, drags and eventually stops.
What to check before you call anyone
Look at the photo-eyes first. They sit six inches off the floor, which is where snow gets shovelled and where things get leaned. A lens that is dirty, damp or a few degrees out of line will stop a door closing and produce a fault that looks far worse than it is.
Then check the trolley is engaged. A motor that runs while nothing moves is very often nothing more than a release cord somebody pulled and forgot about.
Where the money gets wasted
Replacing a whole door because of one dented section. If the rest of the door is sound and the model is still available, a single section is a fraction of the cost. It is worth asking the question before anybody quotes you for a full replacement.
Before you do anything else
Work out whether the door is safe to keep using. A spring, a cable or anything that has left the door crooked means stop. A noise, a slow cycle or an intermittent remote means you have time.
Getting that distinction right is worth more than any amount of troubleshooting.
